I think the Fiesta is one of Ford's best ideas! I've owned this car for 19 years and put 170,000 miles on it. It's quick, it handles very well, it's practical and good looking. I've carried 8 foot landscape timbers in it (with the hatch closed), traveled cross contry twice and taken my wife to the theater in it. I tried a couple of times to sell it, and just couldn't bring myself to do it. Throughout its life, I've upgraded the engine, transmission, suspension and interior, all of which improved it without detracting from its tremendous character. I owned a BMW 2002tii briefly, and it couldn't carry my Fiesta's dipstick. I sold the Bimmer and kept the Fiesta. If Ford still imported the Fiesta, I'd buy a new one in a minute! |
it's great, i love it! i will never get rid of it. i'm going to keep that thing running forever and put 1,000,000 miles on it. in fact i have two of them. somebody could offer me 10,000 dollars for it and i would'nt sell it. FORD RULES!!! |
Best car I ever owned. I wishFord would start making them again. It is still better than any small Ford made since. 40mpg, great acceleration good seats. |
A friend gave a 78 Fiesta to me over a year ago. It runs well, accelerates like a jack rabbit, has good fuel economy, has quick handling. The money I spent was mosty to recover from neglected maintenance-clutch,brakes, tune up, etc. Great deal, I think. |
The Ford Fiesta that I had from 1981 to 1990 is one that brings back fondest memories. Owners of this car seem to develop a relationship with it similar to the VW Beetle. It had a few faults and limitations, but if one could get past those, there were many qualities to enjoy and take advantage of. Handling was responsive, acceleration (especially 0-20 pulling away from a stop) was good, fuel economy was very good, and so was reliability. The brakes needed above average maintenance, and it had a tendency to go through water pumps. Other than those items, the car was very reliable. The ride had a tendency to get choppy, and it could feel cramped inside at times, but the sheer joy of driving it, reliably and at low cost, overcame the drawbacks. It was difficult to demonstrate the sparkling acceleration I enjoyed in this car commuting alone when a passenger came along because the extra weight was enough to slow it down. Eventually rust and old age caught up with it, but I was lucky to find a college student who was interested in it as a "beater."
The 78-80 Fiesta's are one of the most fun cars ever put on the road. There is enough after market equipment to make these as fast as you want to be (more or less). I put on a big valve head, high compression pistons, bigger carburetor and a free flow exhaust system. Easy to work on too and visibility all around that won't quit. I owned five at one time a few years ago. Down to one but still interested in a good deal. |
I love it. I own a bright orange '78 ford fiesta. It was born the same year I was :). She's a bit dinged and has a spot of rust or two here and there. But for a twenty year old car she's aging well. She needs some clutchwork..well, I need to rebuild her clutch. I also need to adjust her brakes. But other than that, she's a fine car. My mother hates her. She thinks the orange glow in the driveway clashes with the well groomed grounds, white suburban house and late model cars which belong to my parents and younger sister. This too adds to her appeal.
Greetings, I'm a self-aware car-aholic, and have owned everything from a Fiat Spider and the old German Capri(s) to a Peugeot 405 Mi16 and several 5-liter Mustangs. I have champagne tastes, but am on a tap water budget. In the perfect world I would own a Lotus Europa (with the later twin-cam Kent engine) and a Fiat Spider w/a Dino V6 for the playful days, a clean '72 Pantera for when I felt like driving something 'different', the '55 Thunderbird that my mom used to drive me around in when I was a lad...and a '61-'67 vintage Lincoln convertible for those memorable top-down road trips with your friends/fellow automotive 12-steppers. ;-) Since all that will have to wait until I get my kids through school, I have kept the enthusiast flame alive with a succession of...Ford Fiestas. I know I shouldn't be letting the secret out, but a '78-'80 Fiesta with the right bits in it (more on this later) is nothing less than a (very) poor man's Lotus. (Hint: The car weighs all of 1800 lbs. in ready to wail form.) Not only that, but unlike some of my previous playthings, this is one car that thrives on exercise. As long as you don't run them out of any essential fluids, you can't kill a Fiesta -- the only other car in my entire life that felt this indestructible ...was the '60s-era red Tonka truck that I used to play with as a kid. (Of course I'm supposed to insert several amazing couldn't kill it war stories here to support my claim, but in the interest of not incriminating myself in a public forum I'll take the 5th. ;-) Over in Europe they were sold primarily with 950cc, 1.1l, & 1.3l 4-cylinder engines. The 1.6l XR2 Fiesta in Europe was their equivalent of the 5.0 Mustang here in the States -- cheap & fast. (Keep in mind that the europeans paid 3-4x as much for their gas as we did.) As a matter of fact, there was a similar rivalry in europe between the Ford Fiesta and the VW Rabbit as our Mustang & Camaro. To be perfectly honest, however, I wouldn't campaign a purely stock Fiesta on New England interstates in 1999 without a few upgrades. You see, too many folks are perfectly comfortable letting me be their self-propelled crumple zone while driving in front of their multi-ton SUVs. Ergo, to be successful one must approach driving a Fiesta the same way that you would ride a Ducati -- that is, make sure you are the most agile & nimble thing on the road, and that you have everything you need in order to simply stay out of harm's way. Fortunately there is a solution. There is company called BAT (British-American Transfer) who specialize in supporting those who drive European Fords. (Formula Ford, Fiestas, Merkurs, etc) A stock Fiesta is kinda fun, but once you upgrade from 155/75-12 tires on 12"x4.5" wheels to 185/60 13s (insert shameless plug for Yokohama A509s)on a set of Ford factory 13"x6" steel wheels (designed for the Turbo Fiesta sold in europe) then let the games begin. Add the uprated brake kit, european rally suspension, big-valve head, tuned header, and big-bore exhaust, and *now* you will have no problem staying out of harm's way. (And as a side benefit the car now driives like you just bought a street-legal go-kart, but looks like a stock econobox...the best of both worlds -- people take pity on you when they see the car; meanwhile you are having the time of your life. ;-) **** I realize that by writing this I won't change the mind of a single person out there about the '78-'80 german Fiesta (Important Note: Not to be confused with the later Festiva!)but the real moral of the story is that you don't have to spend your kids college fund on a car in order to have some real fun with it. With the internet, finding parts for something like a Fiat Spider has never been easier...so instead of buying another 4- wheeled appliance the next time around, buy a copy of Hemmings, find yourself something a little off the beaten path for short money, and to paraphrase Lou Reed, "Take a drive on the wild side".
